Sunday August 17

Quote of the Day: "It's getting a little touristy out there".

Early morning fishing as I was pulling out of Silverthorne:

Dillon Reservoir:

Flowers along the bike path which goes from Dillon > Frisco > Breckenridge:

Condos with mountain backdrop and view out to the marina:

Marina in Frisco:

The real deal in Colorado:

This is Chef Eric and Katelyn. You know I wouldn't think  of eating these things but they do look good don't they. I remember they made a big impression on me as a kid when in New Orleans:

Yes getting touristy:

Chairlift is operational in Breckenridge year around:

Eiffel Tower replica made from bicycle wheels:

Kids playing in the river just below the Eiffel Tower:

Shot leaving Breckenridge and heading to Hoosier Pass:

Just out of town I turned over 2000 miles on the tour:

At the pass. This was only a 5.7 Freebird climb. Was a little worse by needing to suit up for rain part way up and then sweating like crazy the balance of the way when the rain tapered off:

View looking back:

View looking forward down into Alma and Fairplay:

I met Adam at the local pub in Hartsel who shared a little reverse osmosis water with me which  is fairly precious in these parts because the water doesn't taste like we think it should. It's kind of sulfery but with the electrolyte replacement tablets in it who can tell the difference anyway!!?? I enjoyed talking to Adam and he was interested in the design of my bike:

Looking back to Hartsel:

Second time I saw Buffalo on the trip:

Route 9 out of Hartsel to Guffey was newly repaved road - very nice, low traffic evening ride:

Not sure what this is all about (meant to ask the locals but I forgot) but I saw a lot of these signs:

Didn't expect to see this out here:

Ain't that purdy:

My lifesavers in Guffey - Gary, Judy, and JoAnne (not in photo). I skidded into Guffey sideways at about 9:30pm after a wild ride down the mountain wherein I almost hit deer in two places - that I know of - could have been more. I have to get a better light on the front of the bike. The kitchen at the Freshwater Saloon had been closed for an hour and a half but Gary and crew took pity on me and produced some wonderful beef brisket with potato salad and slaw as well as a sample of his smoked baloney.

The folks in Guffey had some concern about me camping out because of a local bear that had been causing havoc so I got to sleep in the saloon - more on that tomorrow - Thanks so much Gary!!!

It's time folks please.......

And finally please remember the cause -   soldiersbestfriend.org  I will go into this in more detail and perhaps some level of haranguing later on, but for now here is the link .... and an additional link for donation   SoldiersBestFriend - Donate Please :):)   Oh and I would be a lot more comfortable if you use the "honorarium" option vs the "memoriam" option - you'll understand when you click on the link:):).

As you donate please enter my name in the "In Honor of Spot" so the folks at SBF can tally the results to encourage me and let me know WE are getting something done TOGETHER. I recognize we are really trying to honor the Vets but this is the only way SBF can tally the results of this drive (tour).

  1. Neil, great to see that you passed the half way point! If you want a suggestion on lights, then I would take a look at Niterider. I have their Minewt 300 (300 lumens) - it has three brightness settings as well as a blink mode. I picked that up for under $90 2 years ago... Rechargeable Lithium Ion battery and a high efficiency LED bulb.

  2. Juice,

Thank you so much for your suggestion and when I get to "a real bike shop" I will check them out. Thanks for following along.
