Quote of the Day: "Every picture tells a story ... don't it"
                                                                                                     Rod Stewart

Along the way several have advised me to stay out of Illinois. I heard comments like "they are bankrupt there in every sense of the word and from the financial bankruptcy aspect of it, they will lock you up just to get some money out of  you".

There was only a small part of Illinois I would need to go through in any case but it involved interstate highway which we weren't sure was legal so with that in mind Tony from SEMO Cycle shop crafted me a different route through the back country to take the ferry across from Dorena MO to Hickman KY. The key was going to be to make sure I didn't miss the last trip of the evening which was at 5:30pm.

This is Sammy - found him out taking a-walk-about with no particular destination in mind - at least none that I could get out of him:):)

Parade of harvesting equipment through East Prairie MO:

If you were driving too fast, missed this sign and were overall a bit numb you would end up in the Mississippi River:

Just over the knoll and beyond the sign is the ferry to Hickman KY:

We were waiting for a woman that had called to say that she was on her way to the ferry. This was a working tug in the river:

Eventually we left the Dorena side without the woman - I told them I was willing to wait longer but they wanted to get home. My bike and I were it for that trip. Even with my hefty $2 fare I think they lost money. This is approaching the Hickman ramp:

A Bonnie and Clyde car in Hickman:

It seems like kudzu stops at the Mississippi River. As I see this for the first time on my trip I am reminded of how invasive a species it is:

An election for a jailer??? Well I am in Kentucky now:

Check out the counter-weight on this gate - fairly appropriate for an engine rebuild shop:

I wonder if this guy's a runner??:):)

I arrived in Union City TN. I have been searching for a Tennessee map for 4 states now and for some strange reason can't find one. I looked in Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, and now Tennessee itself. None at the gas stations or Walmart in Union City.

I have an interview at the Union City newspaper in the morning so I will hope to get a photocopy of a map from them.

Donations update:  Currently at $685

About Soldiers Best Friend ..... If you have been following along you already know that I am trying to collect donations for the charity called Soldiers Best Friend. This is a charity that provides service dogs to Vets that are suffering from PTSD. These dogs can literally be life savers for these men and women.

My blog averages approximately 175 hits per day. I think that suggests folks are interested in the trip and hopefully are being informed and entertained. I am at the half-way point of the trip at 2151 miles. I consider this my job for the summer of 2014. I am putting in the the "blood, sweat, and gears" to steal a phrase - so would you consider a donation to this very worthy cause?

I've done the math for you .... My entire trip is going to be approximately 4200 miles long. Do you think you could donate $.006 per mile (like about slightly more than 1/2 cent per mile)?? If so then that would be a $25 dollar donation to SBF. Or better yet could you afford to donate at $.012 per mile (1.2 cents per mile) then that would be about a $50 donation. And so on ....  give what you can - I know this sounds like a Nation Public Radio fund drive but come on - what a worthy cause!!

Please follow the link below to donate and include my name - just "Neil" will do or "Neal" if you like that spelling better:):)

It's time folks please.......

And finally please remember the cause -   soldiersbestfriend.org  I will go into this in more detail and perhaps some level of haranguing later on, but for now here is the link .... and an additional link for donation   SoldiersBestFriend - Donate Please :):)   Oh and I would be a lot more comfortable if you use the "honorarium" option vs the "memoriam" option - you'll understand when you click on the link:):).

As you donate please enter my name in the "In Honor of Spot" so the folks at SBF can tally the results to encourage me and let me know WE are getting something done TOGETHER. I recognize we are really trying to honor the Vets but this is the only way SBF can tally the results of this drive (
